Introducing The Walking Classroom at Bain Elementary!
www.thewalkingclassroom.org

Picture

Due to the incredible generosity of donors Mr. and Mrs. Shenk, we now have a set of audio devices preloaded with 167 content-based, student friendly podcasts from The Walking Classroom!  Research shows that cognitive function is improved through movement while learning.  Taking brisk walks around campus, while listening and learning about historic events, science concepts, and literacy topics is a great way to learn!  Students that have already participated are asking, "Mrs. Blackmon--Can we learn this way everyday?"

Bain Elementary TD is also now on the CANVAS online learning system!

Q: What is CANVAS?
•A: An online learning platform where students can access TD materials, assignments, etc. from anywhere.  Used in many colleges across the nation.
Q: How will it help my child?
•A: It will allow students access to TD coursework from anywhere.  This should help them to organize their work, find materials, make-up missed work, and keep track of their performance.
Q: Will they be having TD “online” instead of with Mrs. Blackmon?
•A:  No.  It will be used in concert with regular instruction as a tool for a more “hybrid” approach to learning.

CHAINS Novel Study forAcademically Gifted Fifth Graders

Help me give my students a fascinating, emotional novel that explores power, freedom and the strength of the human spirit! My StudentsAt our school, we are focused on providing students with rich literary experiences. As a teacher of academically and intellectually gifted students, I am committed to putting complex, nuanced, and rigorous literary text into the hands of my students.
In our talent development programming our fifth graders interact with a variety of texts, take part in intellectual discourse through Paideia Seminars, analyze complex texts and author's craft, and are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions.

This particular novel study will serve as a backdrop to our annual school field trip to Washington D.C. as students walk upon the hallowed grounds of Monticello, Mount Vernon, the US Capitol, the Jefferson Memorial and many others. Please consider helping me to bring this pivotal time period alive for students as they are transported to the past in the pages of Laurie Halse Anderson's "Chains."
My ProjectThe novel "Chains" by Laurie Halse Anderson "is a compelling, impeccably researched novel that shows the lengths we can go to cast off our chains, both physical and spiritual." This is a story of a young slave girl who must fight for freedom during the birth of our nation. This set of 50 novels will allow for a large-scale novel study among our academically and intellectually gifted fifth-grade students.
We know that gifted students must be enriched and challenged through quality, nuanced literature. This novel not only aligns with the fifth-grade study of the American Revolution, but it also fulfills ALL of the components of text-complexity that we value in gifted education. This novel will lend itself to rich academic discourse, excellent writing opportunities, an analysis of authors' craft, a greater understanding of our nation's history, and a transformative examination of the strength of our human spirit.

Welcome back to Talent Development!

Picture
Welcome back to the 2017-2018 school year!  This is one of my favorite times of year because I get to reconnect with my students and co-teachers!  I also get to usher in new students to the program, refine successful instructional practices, and try out brand NEW ideas.  I have spent my summer reading, writing and reflecting on these practices which always serves to rejuvenate and re-engergize me.  After 15 years of teaching, I still feel that "electricity" of excitement as I prepare to welcome my students back to school!  As always, you are encouraged to visit this site monthly and click on the "What's Happening" tab to see what your child is doing in TD.  Then select the current month from the drop down menu!

DEP MEETING POWERPOINT FOUND by clicking HERE

What can parents do to help their gifted child over the summer?

We know how important it is for children to read over the summer.  However, sometimes we might need a little inspiration to help us find more ways to enrich our children.  I love this list of seven suggestions from MENSA for kids.  These are a great starting point, but hopefully these will inspire you to get creative too!

Excellence in Reading--Lists for Gifted Readers

These two lists will hopefully get you inspired to choose some classic reading material for your child this summer.  The more rigorous their reading, the more it challenges their mind!
